Los Angeles History

Los Angeles, with a population at the 2010 United States Census of 3,792,621, is the most populous city in California, and the second most populous in the United States, after New York City. It has an area of 468.67 square miles, and is located in Southern California. Often known by its initials LA, the city is the focal point of the larger Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana metropolitan statistical area, which contains 12,828,837 people as of 2010, and is one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world and the second largest in the United States. Los Angeles is also the seat of Los Angeles County, the most populated and one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the United States, while the entire Los Angeles area itself is also among the most diverse metropolitan areas in the United States.

Los Angeles is irregularly shaped and covers a total area of 502.7 square miles, comprising 468.7 square miles of land and 34.0 square miles of water. The city extends for 44 miles longitudinally and for 29 miles latitudinally. The perimeter of the city is 342 miles.

Los Angeles is both flat and hilly. The highest point in the city is 5,074 ft Mount Lukens, located at the northeastern end of the San Fernando Valley. The eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains stretches from Downtown to the Pacific Ocean and separates the Los Angeles Basin from the San Fernando Valley. Other hilly parts of Los Angeles include the Mt. Washington area north of Downtown, eastern parts such as Boyle Heights, the Crenshaw district around the Baldwin Hills, and the San Pedro district.
